If you play Kharak first, you will definitely miss a lot of references and the ending probably will not make a lot of sense-it certainly did not for me. If you know Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul, you will know what I mean. Kharak is a prequel to Homeworld, but just because something is a prequel does not mean it should be played, read, viewed etc first. Storywise, there are positives and negatives to starting with it. I think Homeworld would have been too much for me without playing Deserts of Kharak first, with the ability to select the easy level for my first attempt. Tactically, it is easier, or at least for me who had never played an RTS before. Likr you, I had never played either until only some months ago. I know I am answering about a month late, but here are some thoughts: Originally posted by Tropicoll:i know it's a prequel but it's released after homeworld so i don't know if it spoils stuff etc.

Your comments helped me make the decision since Deserts of Kharak will help set the stage and add additional background to the original Homecoming game. I haven't played Homeworld Remastered which is in my backlog yet, I but have heard a lot of good things about it. This helped me made the decision to buy Deserts of Kharak today especially at 89% off. Stories are both solid as is the art style. The only major difference between the two games is the 3D conflict in Homeworld, which is easy to adapt to once you understand sensor management.

Recon Skimmer in DOK= interceptors in HW.

if only due to the fact it sets up the global factions and their mindset's and lays the premise for reaching into the unknown and taking the ultimate gamble that progresses the conflict and lays the foundation for the saga.ĭOK will lay the ground work for how you traverse the game from active sensors manager, (returns in HW) to unit production from your carrier/mothership, to the types of classes involved.
